Abstract
Purpose: The aim of this study is to present the effectiveness and advantages of laparoscopic herniorrhaphy through a clinical review of the medical records with inguinal hernia.

Methods: We retrospectively analyzed 140 patients who underwent laparoscopic inguinal herniorrhaphy for inguinal hernia between March 2007 and May 2009. The patients were followed up with a physical examination and telephone interview.

Results: Of the 140 patients, 132 patients were male and 8 patients were female, with the average age of 53.2 years (range, 18¡87 years). An average duration of the symptom was 22.0 months (1¡370 months). Fifty two patients were left inguinal hernia, 78 patients were right inguinal hernia and 10 patients were bilateral inguinal hernia. There were 24 cases of direct inguinal hernia, 120 cases of indirect inguinal hernia, and 6 cases of pantaloon type of inguinal hernia. Totally extraperitoneal approach (TEP) was done in 131 (87.3%) cases, and transabdominal preperitoneal approach (TAPP) 19 (12.7%) cases. The mean operation time was 80.3 minutes (range, 30¡295 minutes). The mean analgesics injection after surgery was 0.5 times (0¡1 time). The mean postoperative hospital stay was 1.85 days (range, 1¡12 days). The complication was 41 (27.3%) cases, with 21 (14.0%) hematomas and 12 (8.0%) seromas, but other serious complications and recurrence were not present.

Conclusion: Laparoscopic inguinal herniorrhaphy is a safe and an effective procedure, but we need more experience and long term follow up.
